It's often too late to be told after something bad has happened, so make sure you read through these before your next big adventure!

1. Memorize where you're going

Offline maps are great, but it's always good to know the general directions you're going. 

If you're not good at memorizing, then go old school and write down important facts like the name of your hotel, phone number, and address (if possible, in both English and the local language).

2. A fake itinerary 

Even if a nice-looking employee or fellow traveler asks where you're going, if you don't feel safe, don't tell them where you are headed. Of course, if you feel safe, tell whomever, whatever. But my rule of thumb is to have a backup location that I'm not going to that I tell others. Basically, you have two trips you can explain in detail: one is real, and the other is to protect yourself.

3. Taking a call that didn't come through 

Answering a made-up phone call is one of the easiest tricks to do. In order to get out of a situation you need to step away from, you can always just say you have a phone call you need to take and leave while picking up a phone that isn’t actually ringing.

4. Setting your drop-off location

If you order a ride share app car or taxi, set your drop-off location nearby where your hotel is, not at the actual location. With a normal taxi, just tell them to drop you off a block or two around the corner.

5. Act like you don't speak English

The most classic option in my bag of tricks is to act like I don’t understand English. Having traveled to 31 countries, English is still the predominantly spoken common language. If I don’t feel comfortable talking to someone, I just ignore them or mutter something that is a combination of Japanese and Chinese, or just make up a language!

6. A scarf with a hidden pocket that has a zipper

This is the easiest way to hide small valuables as well as cash and credit cards. It also dubs as a scarf (a lot of Middle Eastern countries require head wraps when entering a mosque) as well as a way to spruce up your outfits in a fashionable way. 

There are also small wallets that snaps on to a bra which create a secret undergarment pocket that seamlessly fits into whatever shirt you're wearing.

7. Share your location with someone you trust 

You can share your real-time location on Google maps super easily with the "Location Sharing" option. You can then choose the length of time you want to share your location and in which way you want to share the link. 

Lifetime 360 typically enables sharing within countries that block Google. There are many other apps available to use that offer the same features, so always use one that is convenient for you in the country you are going to. 8. Give yourself a new name

Don’t tell strangers your real name. Unless you’re going to be best friends for life and forever keep in contact, there is no need to tell a random person you’ll never see again your real name. Use your middle name or come up with a random name you’ll respond to and use that during your travels.

9. Don’t stare at your phone

Especially if you’re traveling alone, make sure you’re looking up more than you are looking down. Sitting in your hotel or hostel is where you plan things, not while you are walking down a busy street. If you get lost or need to figure out where you are, stop walking and look at your phone in a safe spot. Situational awareness is very important, and it helps to keep your phone in your pocket rather than out, so it doesn’t get stolen.

10. Be careful what you share

Nowadays, you can share so much on social media. I chose to back-date travel-related blog posts, so that it didn’t coincide with my actual travel dates. I literally have received comments from people saying how things didn’t align with the current weather. That’s because I went a month or two ago.

It’s also a good idea to post your vacation pics after you get home. There’s no reason to give anyone your real-time location unless you’re meeting up with them. Same goes for leaving your home unoccupied – if you don’t post online that you or your entire family will be gone, it protects your home or anyone who is not traveling with you who lives there.

I hope these tips were helpful in making you think about safety in a way you haven’t previously. For me, these are tips I have learned over the course of many years of traveling and talking with other fellow travelers.

何か悪いことが起きてからでは手遅れになることが多いので、次の大冒険に出かける前に、必ずこれらをよく読んでおいて下さい！

1. 行き先を頭に入れておく

オフラインの地図は便利ですが、大まかな行き先を把握しておくことは常に重要です。 

暗記が苦手な場合は、昔ながらの方法で、ホテルの名前、電話番号、住所などの重要な情報を書き留めておきましょう（可能であれば、英語と現地の言語の両方で）。

2. 偽の旅程 

たとえ見た目の良い店員や他の旅行者が行き先を尋ねてきても、不安を感じるなら、行き先を教えないようにしましょう。もちろん、安心できる相手なら、どこへ遊びに行くか話しても構いません。しかし、私の経験則としては、実際には行かない「予備の行き先」を用意し、それを他人に伝えるようにしています。つまり、詳細に説明できる行き先を2つ用意しておくのです。1つは本当のもので、もう1つは身を守るためのものです。 

3. 実際にはかかっていない電話に出る 

架空の電話に出るというのは、最も簡単なトリックの一つです。その場を離れなければならない状況から抜け出す為に、電話に出なければならないと言って、実際には鳴っていない電話を手に取りながら立ち去るだけで良いのです。

4. 降車場所の設定

ライドシェア・アプリやタクシーを利用する際は、ホテルの正確な場所ではなく、その近くを降車場所として設定しましょう。通常のタクシーなら、わざとホテルから1～2ブロック離れた場所で降ろして欲しいと伝えればOKです。

5. 英語が話せないふりをする

私の「お役立ちテクニック」の中でも最も定番なのが、英語が理解できないふりをすることです。31カ国を旅してきましたが、英語は依然として最も広く使われている共通語です。私は、もし誰かと話すのが気まずいと感じたら、無視するか、日本語と中国語を混ぜたような言葉を呟くか、あるいは架空の言語をでっち上げます！

6. ジッパー付き隠しポケット付きスカーフ

現金やクレジットカードといった小さな貴重品を隠すのに最も簡単な方法です。スカーフとしても使える（中東の多くの国ではモスクに入る際に頭部を覆うことが求められます）上、おしゃれにコーディネートを引き立てるアイテムとしても役立ちます。 

ブラジャーにスナップで留める小さな財布もあり、どんなシャツを着ていても違和感なく馴染む、下着の中に隠れる秘密のポケットを作ることができます 。

7. 信頼できる相手に現在地を共有する 

Googleマップの「位置情報の共有」機能を使えば、リアルタイムの位置情報をとても簡単に共有できます。共有する期間や、リンクの共有方法を選択することも可能です。 

そして、Lifetime 360は、Googleがブロックされている国でも通常、位置情報の共有が可能です。同様の機能を提供するアプリは他にも多数ありますので、訪問する国で自分にとって使いやすいものを常に利用しましょう。 

8. 新しい名前を使う

見知らぬ人に本名を教えないようにしましょう。一生の親友になってずっと連絡を取り合うのでない限り、二度と会うことのない見知らぬ人に本名を教える必要はありません。ミドルネームを使ったり、呼びやすい架空の名前を考えたりして、旅行中はそれを使いましょう。

9. スマホに没頭しない

特に一人旅の場合は、下を向くよりも上を向くように心がけましょう。計画を立てるのはホテルやホステルに滞在している時であって、人通りの多い通りを歩いている最中ではありません。道に迷ったり、現在地を確認する必要がある場合は、歩きを止めて安全な場所でスマホを確認しましょう。周囲の状況に注意を払うことは非常に重要です。また、スマホをポケットに入れておく方が、手に持ったままにするよりも盗難防止になります。

10. シェアする内容には注意する

昨今では、ソーシャルメディアで多くの情報をシェアできます。私は旅行関連のブログ記事を遡って投稿するようにしています。そうすることで、実際の旅行日程と重ならないようにしているのです。実際に、現在の天気と記事の内容が一致しないというコメントをいただいたこともあります。それは、私が1～2ヶ月前に旅行したためです。

また、休暇中の写真は帰宅してから投稿するのも良いアイデアです。誰かと待ち合わせをする場合を除き、リアルタイムの位置情報を他人に知らせる必要はありません。自宅を空ける場合も同じです。自分や家族全員が留守にすることをオンラインで投稿しなければ、自宅や、一緒に旅行していない同居人を守ることができます。

これらのヒントが、これまでとは違った視点で安全について考えるきっかけになれば幸いです。私にとって、これらは長年の旅行経験や、他の旅行者との会話を通じて学んだ知恵をまとめたものです。

1. 记住你的目的地

离线地图固然不错，但了解大致的行进方向总是很有帮助的。 

如果你记性不好，那就用老办法，把重要信息写下来，比如酒店名称、电话号码和地址（如果可能的话，最好用英语和当地语言两种语言写）。

2. 伪造行程 

即使有位看起来友善的员工或同行的旅客问你去哪里，如果你觉得不安全，就不要告诉他们你的目的地。当然，如果你觉得安全，想告诉谁就告诉谁，想说什么就说什么。但我的经验法则是：准备一个自己不会去的地方作为备用地点，告诉别人。基本上，你可以详细解释两趟行程：一趟是真实的，另一趟则是为了保护自己。

3. 接一个根本没打来的电话 

假装接听未接来电是最简单的应对技巧之一。为了摆脱需要抽身的处境，你可以直接说“有电话要接”，然后一边拿起其实并没有响的手机，一边离开现场。

4. 设置下车地点

如果你通过打车软件或叫出租车，请将下车地点设在酒店附近，而不是酒店的具体位置。如果是普通出租车，只需告诉司机在拐角处一两个街区外下车即可。

5. 假装不懂英语

在我的一套应对技巧中，最经典的一招就是假装听不懂英语。虽然我曾游历过31个国家，但英语依然是主要通用语言。如果我感觉和某人交谈不自在，我就会直接忽略对方，或者嘟囔几句日语和中文的混合语，甚至干脆编造一种语言！

6. 带拉链隐藏口袋的围巾

这是藏匿小件贵重物品、现金和信用卡最简单的方法。它既能充当围巾（许多中东国家进入清真寺时要求头巾遮盖），又能时尚地点缀你的装扮。 

此外还有可扣在胸罩上的小钱包，能打造出隐蔽的内衣口袋，无论搭配什么衬衫都能完美贴合。 

7. 与你信任的人分享你的位置 

你只需通过“位置共享”选项，即可在谷歌地图上轻松分享你的实时位置。随后，你可以选择共享位置的时长以及通过何种方式分享链接。 

Lifetime 360 通常可在屏蔽 Google 的国家/地区实现位置共享。市面上还有许多其他具备相同功能的应用，因此请务必选择在你前往的国家/地区使用起来最方便的一款。 

8. 给自己起个新名字

不要向陌生人透露真实姓名。除非你们将成为一生的挚友并永远保持联系，否则没必要向一个你再也不会见到的陌生人透露真实姓名。不妨使用你的中间名，或者编一个你愿意回应的随机名字，并在旅途中使用它。

9. 不要一直盯着手机看

特别是独自旅行时，请确保抬头看周围的时间多于低头看手机的时间。规划行程应该在酒店或青旅里进行，而不是走在繁忙的街道上。如果你迷路了或需要确认位置，请先停下脚步，找个安全的地方再看手机。保持对周围环境的警觉非常重要，而且把手机收在口袋里比拿在手里更安全，这样可以防止被盗。

10. 谨慎分享信息

如今，人们可以在社交媒体上分享很多内容。我选择将旅行相关的博客文章日期设为过去，这样就不会与我实际的旅行日期重合。我确实收到过评论，说文章内容与当前天气不符。那是因为我是在一两个月前去的。

回家后再发布度假照片也是个好主意。除非你要和某人见面，否则没有必要向任何人透露你的实时位置。同理，家中无人时也应注意——若不在线上透露你或全家将外出，这能保护你的家，以及那些未随行但住在你家的人。

希望这些建议能让你从前所未有的角度思考安全问题。对我而言，这些都是我通过多年旅行以及与其他旅行者的交流中总结出的经验。
